Can confirm that at least around midnight the Quaking Fields are "overcrowded" with these. Found my rare on the 20th (or so) attempt and there were still masses of them left.
Crimson Expanse ist not the best place to tame this pet. When flying around there, I found only one or two per about 15 minutes, with a similar spawn rate like the turkey in Valgarde.
Finally found "tons" of them a bit more to the north on the lower level plateu with the giants and on the way from there to the twilight hammer. Was about 11:30pm, after midnight the population was almost gone and there was no to less respawn.
I own this pet and it is level 25 already, but the Armory seems buggy as this pet is not listed there, neither under "collected" nor under "not collected".
As of Patch 5.0.5 (10-29-2012) this Pet is not needed for the Safari Achievement. Ie. it not only is not checked in the Achievement's Criteria.
I thought I only would need this one and the Mokassin, so I gone out to fetch them - first the Mokassin. The moment I caught it I got the Achievement - without the Wharf Rat.
In fact, I only had uncommons. Not only no rares, also no "poor" and no "common" ones... Seems like a bug. Will get a green one now...
Can be directly found only by the gates of Ahn'Qiraj and in the "Lost Kingdom" (uninstanced AQ zone). In the latter the battle pets don't have any company, they fight alone. You should also search in the mountains around, there are also some pets hidden.
Best way to farm the Scarab however is waiting for him accompany other pets. That way I finally got my rare one.
