You dont have to kill the Elders, just wait, I finished off max level rares in this zone being Tree Python, Long Tailed Mole, Spotted Bell Frog, Parrot, and this little guy. 

The only thing I killed were slimes and oozes for the bags and got me a Disgusting Oozling.  I believe in the battle pet saturation, have to clear some out for new ones to spawn. Every time I flew back to path of terror and usually had 3-5 spawns up, took about 45 min to get my rare! 

Took about 5 rounds of killing at Jademir Lake in Northern Feralas, also picked up the distress beacon, do all 3 and you get a robo chicken!   Fast spawns, so just kill!
