I just got mine this morning. They don't seem to show up any way but solo, in a battle.
As for spawning, I tried staying up until Server Midnight, but I never saw one in the past month. I was up at 7 am and flew over and saw 4 icons underground. I fought them all and there were 2 poor, 1 common, and 1 rare.
