WOOOT! Finally got my crimson whelpling after 3574 loots. SOOO happy! Tomorrow is 4.0.1, and I am so glad I got it before patch. So to all who despair...fear not, your whelpling will come. :)

I, too, am looking for pet-oriented arena buddies for the tournament.
Update: Found a group yesterday and did a few matches. We're supposed to do more tonight and tomorrow, but if it falls through, I will definitely email you Adorathena! Full disclosure, though: no one is winning any titles with me on the team!

Re: Dark Whelpling
I was doing quests in Badlands for Loremaster and cleared the ravine on each pass around the region. Got it on my 73rd kill! Must have used up my good karma, though, because having no luck on the red whelpling or the razormaw hatchling in Wetlands. Rats.
