It took me four days to get the alternate skin, it was truly a grind. However, it was a lot more obvious than what other comments led me to believe. I wasted a lot of time comparing the spawns to one I already had, as well as gernal worry over if I hadn't noticed. As long as you're paying attention, you should be able to tell instantly.

Camped the double cave spawns for 4 hours to get my green haired one. Pretty fast respawns and you can peak the colors easily enough. Line of sight for killing was a little finicky.

It took a good 6 hours of sitting on the sledding island for a green eyed one to spawn, it was quite miserable. But, they do exist. I spent most of that time just flying down to check eyes and murdering non greens, didn't bother getting in battle with any but the one stuck in the floor. The spawn rate is pretty good actually, a lot better than when I spent at least a couple hours checking rivers. Camp the sledding island for sure.
