They've implemented raid exclusive pets before (two of them currently) and there are a few dungeon boss drop ones as well. I doubt he's activated yet, a lot of the pet stuff hasn't been implemented yet. Let's face it, it's not part of the core game for most people and not a major selling point. We'll see more stuff in the coming few months I'm certain.

Those with no luck on getting trades worked out, check the neutral AH too. I saw one there for 10000g on my server earlier, much less than what was being asked by the main AH. Still very expensive for a pet though, but just a thought.

I doubt they will turn pets into one item across every character because that will give you unfair advantages in pet battles. Though if they did they, I'm sure you would still retain the same leveled pet across all your characters so while it might feel like you're "losing" pets, all your characters...
