Also if it's only visible to people who are drunk you could also mess with their heads a bit

I would counter Lost nether pup with a [pet]Mechanical Axebeak[/pet] its haywire would make quick work against it aswell as beast attacks being weak against it. Its lift off or decoy can also be used to lessen any big damage from howl.
