As far as pet battles go, I also enjoy Battle Pets (formerly known as Battle Pets with Alludra and Kephas), it's more of a casual show than a battling-focused show but I know lots of people on this site are more collecting-focused. I NEVER rely on full-team synergy in PvP, it can be very powerful in PvE (e.g. the Call Lightning team against a boss beast) but I take the "Shademaster Kiryn" approach when building my PvP teams now--at least 2 weather effects and self-synergy on every. Single. Pet. I REALLY hate swap-reliant teams...

If you have Spirit of Summer it can almost 2-for-1 the first two pets (Flame Breath, Immolate, Conflagrate), then I Clockwork Gnome the monkey (don't bother to heal, just drop turretts and punch) and bring in a "not-quite-carry" pet to finish him off--anything over level 20ish that's not weak agains...

We don't really complain when the RNG works out in our favor, so I think there's probably selection bias in the idea that trainer pets beat the RNG . . . This is IMO a nifty trick to keep in your back pocket, I always Headbutt Socks after he dies on the off-chance I can avoid his Ascension entirely.
