It does depend on the type of the heal. If it says it heals for a number then it scales by P. If it says it heals by a % then it only scales by total health.

No because there is no definitive "best" breed. It can depend on the pet, the move set you are picking, the opponent you are fighting and any number of other things.

Traps are odd. Clearing them does trigger them. Minefield, decoy, turrets, other things like that get cleared pretty effectively but against traps it is basically just setting them off early. As far as I can tell you are better off just ignoring them and hoping you win before they trigger.

Nocturnal Strike seems to always hit the opponent if they are blinded. It doesn't hit against elementals not because elementals have some special affect on nocturnal strike but because they are immune to the negative aspects of weather so don't get blinded by darkness. There is no way to tell the gender in game. Even with a addon. The armory API tells what gender a pet is which is how warcraft pet knows but it's not available in game.

I like a emerald proto-whelp. The combination Emerald Presence and Emerald dream makes them almost unkillable in wild battles.
