I do a mix. If something I care to do, I try getting the pet the "normal" way. If something I dont really want to do, or have horrible luck at, and isnt too insane prize, I am happy to buy it off the AH. I rarely farm for pets, not how I like spending my days. I must have gotten lucky. I got a rare S/S pretty quickly. It's a pretty strong pet, too. I've been using Hawk Eye, Quills, and Drain Blood and it's pretty potent.

Off topic, but your question was answered. Anyway, make sure you log in to your alts, if only for a quick log-on, log-off (say it with us Mr. Miyagi). That way they will start accumulating rested XP. If you don't log on with them, they won't.

Just as an FYI:

If you're just after the achievement, just have a friend with the raid pet cage it, trade it to you, learn it, re-cage it, then trade it back. You'll get credit towards the achievement.

I started a DK on TVC. Got a Giraffe Calf finally. Took a look for a Scourged Whelpling, but no luck. I'll check back after reset on Tues.
