You totally can AFK it all the way, just using Training Mode.

You won't be kicked out and you only need to enter a new game every 10-20 minutes.

When I first started collecting and leveling pets in MoP, I had a hard time leveling pets. All I had was a lvl 25 clockwork gnome, but It could defeat lots of masters anyway. Until I met this guy, in Dragonblight... I had to give up and realize i couldn't have just 1 max level pet, pokemon style :D ...
