He is bugged. I have done this quest 3 times and have never been able to open the cage. Blizzard is aware that its screwed up and they dont seem to care. I tried realm hopping, war mode, going into an instance... ect...I get the gear on the cage but nothing happens. So your not alone, and its annoyi...

I also just tried to share it with a fellow pet addict on my realm. I appears that it is no longer shareable but you can still cage and trade the pet. I hooked my test subject up with one for the assist.

I do minimum of 10 per day. Usually split them half heroic, half normal.
