Battle pets are actually battle.net account wide, so you don't need to restrict trading to just your server. You can learn a pet on any server that you can log into (any US server), on any character... and it will be in your journal & will count for the achieve on your home server/main/etc. (Similarly, if you cage a pet on some random server, it will be gone from your journal on your main, etc too.)
It seems you're missing a lot of relatively common, inexpensive pets; if you look for any in the AH (battle pet section), don't forget to look under Misc > Companion Pets too.
