I spoke with a GM last night to confirm. He said you have to go through the purchasing process through the store and at the end there's an option to gift it to someone.

Looks like I own the Digital Deluxe Edition now. It's not like the pet will go to waste.

I'm sincerely sorry, Slog. I spent over a half hour speaking with a GM over BNet chat last night trying to confirm that you could gift a DDE upgrade. That's the only reason I went ahead with this trade attempt.
