Available pet challenges in Legion so far

Hey!
Over the last weeks I've checked on the new Dalaran pet tournament area ever day and made some notes. I'm quite sure that by now I have captured everything that is available so far, so I'd like to present a small summary :-)
Keep in mind it's still alpha content and will amost certainly change very much before release.

The same summary including pictures of the tamers is also available here: http://wow-petguide.com/index.php?jumpto=47

The current "system" in the Dalaran arena is very similar to the garrison menagerie. Although there are no quests, achievements or any other kind of reward system present, every day there is a different Master Tamer or challenge present in the tournament ring. So far I have encountered 7 different opponents.

In contrast to the menagerie, the order in which they appear seems to be completely random. I've seen the same challenger three times in a row, others only once so far in 4 weeks. But what they all have in common is that currently they are not very hard to beat. I assume that before Legion release they will receive another pass with either new spells or higher stats or something along those lines.

Here's an overview:
  • Sir Galveston (http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=99182)
This knight in shining armor keeps his medieval appearance throughout his pets as well.
He comes with epic-quality pets (which is quite a different to most of the others who have blue quality pets):

Sir Murkeston http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=99186/sir-murkeston
Greatest Foe http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=99187/greatest-foe
Coach http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=99185/coach

Thanks to Sir Murkestons Falling Murloc spell, which can swap his pets around, the fight resembles a little bit fighting Tarr the Terrible, although his other pets, Greatest Foe and Coach, are rather easy to beat.
  • Tiffany Nelson (http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=97804/tiffany-nelson)
In this fight you encounter three rare-quality pets, a spider, a moth and a cat:

Jinx http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=97826/jinx
Rocket http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=97823/rocket
Marshmallow http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=97818/marshmallow

None of them have any particular special abilities, and thanks to the blue quality stats this fight is currently one of the easiest among all of the Dalaran opponents.
  • Heliosus (http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=105236/heliosus)
Probably the most interesting fight is this one, since it introduces a new mechanic into the pet battling game. Once you start the fight, a phoenix rises from the egg and fights against you. As with many other legendary encounters, this enemy fights solo but has a larger health pool and some very strong attacks to compensate the lack of companions.
Once you beat him, a second stage of the fight starts in which the egg reappers. It has the same amount of healthpoints, but no spells at all. It only stays for five rounds however and if you do not manage to destroy it in those five rounds, the phoenix reappears from the ashes fully recovered and will fight you again.
These two stages repeat until you kill the egg entirely. However due to the large damage output of the phoenix you'll not likely survive that long.
The key to winning this fight is to keep debuffs or damaging spells on the phoenix right before it dies, because they carry over to the egg, giving you an advantage and making it easier.
  • Amalia (http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=107489/amalia)
Corgis are a part of Blizzard and that will not likely change anytime soon. Not surprisingly, there is a Corgi-themed pet tamer. Amalia is accompanied by these furry friends:

Stumpers http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=107491/stumpers
Foof http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=107492/foof
Lil'Sizzle http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=107493/lil-sizzle

They are beat easily with almost any random team of pets thanks to their blue quality stats. But given their spells are quite diverse and not all of them are simply beast pets, they might pose a good challenge if given some proper stats!
  • Splint Jr. (http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=105241/splint-jr)
Another solo fighter, Splint Jr. comes with a super obvious reference to some strangely mutated turtles. On top, he brings the well-known legendary pet buff that makes him ignore 50% of all incoming damage. Nothing particularly special about him otherwise.
  • Bodhi Sunwayver (http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=99210/bodhi-sunwayver)
More Murlocs! Another trainer with rare quality pets that does not hold any big surprises right now.

Itchy http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=99239/itchy
Salty Bird http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=99243/salty-bird
Grommet http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=99245/grommet
  • Stitches Jr. Jr. (http://legion.wowhead.com/npc=105840/stitches-jr-jr)
Last but not least, a classic returns. The menagerie was only a setback - This new version of Stitches is very similar to his counterpart in the menagerie, but received a few new spells that make him hit way harder. Good old howl bomb still makes short work of him.

Oh, so that's were they were hiding! :D

I visited the tournament once, but had not yet learned pet battling, so I was not able to interact with them. That's probably why I didn't notice them being trainers. I was wondering if there are any trainers in the "open world" yet. But I have yet to find any.

I haven't bothered capturing any pets yet, but in case somebody is going to: You don't need to level any pets, you can buy the stones to bring them to lv25 (and the ones to rarify them) in the Dalaran store.

Thanks for putting it here! Interacting with the world through a mobile phone can be sometimes challenging. ;)

Heliosus indeed seems interesting. I almost don't want to fight with him because of my respect to these majestic elementals.
And beating a defenceless? What a cruel world! ;P

Images aside, have both stages got an elite protection buff? Is the egg classified as elemental aswell?

Still, seven encounters in comparison to the Menagerie is not enough! :P I hope for a progressive quest beyond a mere single daily.

I wonder where Chromaddon is hidden.

@Paladance
Heliosus didn't have the 50% buff, but has a healthy life pool of around 2700 hit points. The egg the very same, so it's already quite high. I forgot to note down the family of the egg, sorry :/

You're welcome :-)
The most recent alpha version changed the Dalaran tournament again. None of the above pet challenges are available again. I saw Splint Jr. once but could not battle with him. On most days the area is empty of NPCs apart from the tournament announcer.
Also the bleachers are gone, and there's been some greenery added, trees etc.

One thing is new though: behind the tournament area there is now the NPC "Ms. Liddie" with a couple of pets running and flying around. Ms. Liddie has the description "Battle Pet Day Care". What it means - no idea! :D

Hmm, does it mean that it's a kind of seasonal event, like Darkmoon Faire, rather than something on a daily basis?

That place seems adorable, or at least it sounds like that when you describe it. Good job. :)

Why haven't I congratulated you the Alpha access yet? That's a treasure.Image

The Tournament area (and the battles there) are part of the Pet Battle World Quest system.

Each day 2 pet battle quests will pop up anywhere on The Broken Isles. Sometimes one is in Dalaran, sometimes not, sometimes in other zones. So the tournament is kind of daily, but not really since there's an element of randomness to it.

The fights that show up at the "Dalaran Tournament" are static, even though they do rotate. A quest from Azsuna can't show up at the tournament, for example. Nor can one of the Dalaran battles pop up in any other zone.

I've been keeping track of the quests that pop up daily here, but just very basic info like the name of the quest, the objective(s) and pets involved (lvl, quality, etc.).

Very good resource, thank you!
I need to hit level 110 soon so I can try my hands on them as well :D
I'm curios to see if this will be the "only" pet battling additions in Legion. It's a good deal of new fights/challenges/quests - whichever you want to call them, and they show some awesome variety, but I am a little afraid it will be very repetitive quite soon.

Anyway! Thanks for sharing the info! :-)

I'd like to hope that there will be tougher, more rewarding PVE content waiting for us towards the end of the expansion.

And yea, I agree. The potential for World Quests to become repetitive is high. Then again, the quests that pop up seem pretty random. With bad RNG, I'm sure you could get the same quest maybe 2 days in a row, which would technically extend gameplay...but it wouldn't be very fun.

Oh, and side note, update to Pet Battle World Quests - 3 active quests daily now (up from 2), and the rewards have been improved. Pet Charms, battlestones (but haven't seen a Polished one yet *sigh of relief*), and Artifact Power.

I wouldn't be surprised if that last one caused some discontent with those trying to maximize their artifact power gain daily...'I have to Pet Battle to PVE now? *raaage*' :|

From what I can read it reminds me of the old assault dailies. Who knows, maybe we may get some sort of "missives" (Hey, "discovering" a challenge via completing a well themed class order wouldn't actually be a very bad idea, though it's still lotta RNG!), but again, it would only fasten the content exhaustion! ;)

Oh, it's already like that. Each Pet Battle week there are people ranting that they wouldn't get the VP that week.
On the other hand, most of us are too passive for PvP and we may need it in Dalaran unless we can get pets from the AH?

Heliosus' appearance (as pet in the pet battle interface) won't change when he dies, this means it's still elemental pet family. The Mysterious Egg buff/debuff is compareable to a stronger [ability]Repair[/ability] (lasts longer, heals to full, pet performing no actions).

(Beta servers 2016-May-23) 2176 Hitpoints

Thank you.

Still, it currently seems as a fiesty toast for the [ability]Pump[/ability] users, especially striders (even a weak [pet]Aqua Strider[/pet], with a [ability]Cleansing Rain[/ability] and Pump buff itself, deals 2248 damage in 4 rounds; 3 if preparation is made earlier).

True, but also a Chrominius can easily dismantle him. I think the best strat will be to use one (more or less random strong pet) to kill the phoenix, and then either Chromi or a strider to take care of the egg. Not too hard in my opinion, but a nice little new mechanic :-)

I'm very limited on pets because account data copy doesn't work, so a well timed instant kill was the first thing that came to my mind with the few pets I've captured so far (okay I've got Stinker, so 50+ unique ;) )

And I stumbled upon Chromadon when I was level 100 a few days ago and discovered Stormheim, today I went back there with level 104 and... nothing but I think that's intended when he's part of the level 110 world quests.

Yeah it seems you can see the world quest pets even below 110, but only the ones that are active on a given day. Kind of weird, seems more like an oversight that will be corrected at some point.
I have to level to 110 still, and can't progress in the pet battling quests because all stormwind and elwynn is completely phased out - no NPCs at all ^^ Kind of hard to collect some pets that way ;-)
But I just hope that account copy will be available at some point before Legion actually releases so we can do some proper testing with the new fights!

Can you also interact/battle with them sub-level 110? If so, that's definitely an oversight/bug and should be reported so they can get that sorted out.

Yes I battled him multiple times when I was there with level 100.
