Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
I have two of these and was fixing to sell one when I realized are different color variations of it.

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
Both the [pet]Cavern Moccasin[/pet] and [pet]Young Venomfang[/pet] are "color-changers". That is, they can come in different colors when summoned. You can view their possible colors on their profile pages under the "Alternate Skins" section.
However, these two pets are slightly buggy. I'm not 100% sure of this, but after testing on a few Moccasins and Venomfangs I've found that if a rarity battlestone is used on them, they lose their color-changing ability. Upgrading them to rare makes them stop changing for some reason, and they'll only have their default color.
Hopefully this isn't intentional and it'll get fixed in the future. If you want them to retain their color-changing ability, I would hold off on using any battlestones on them until we can be certain they won't be negatively impacted.

Not 100% sure this is the case, although it may be related.Quintessence wrote:However, these two pets are slightly buggy. I've had 2 Venomfangs. The one I kept is always black, but was already leveled and upgraded when I noticed; whereas the other one was a color changer. So this may point towards rarifying being a factor in removing the color changing ability.
On the other hand, out of my two Moccasins, the one I sold was a color changer but the other one -that I kept- is always white, and this time, none of them is leveled nor upgraded (for breed reasons!). So one is a color changer and the other one isn't, by default.
This leads me to believe that not all of them are color changers, that some are innately locked into one appearance (possibly always the same one?) and that some appearances may only be available to color changers. Rarity may permanently remove color-changing, but cannot confirm since I've kept the fixed-color versions for both pets.
When (or if) I get new ones from WC, I'll spend some Pet Charms in the name of science

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
UPDATE!
Got no pets from WC this week, but [profile]Paladance[/profile] was kind enough to provide a S/B color-changing [pet]Cavern Moccasin[/pet] FOR SCIENCE!
Meet these two babies, adequalely named Clearscale and Shifter.
Clearscale is always white, she was born that way...
But Shifter, however, likes changing from time to time!
In order to correct such outrageous demeanor, I threw a Flawless Battle-Stone at it. The immediate effect was that she changed, in journal, to a pink version (rather than the previous teal one):
Had the stone miraculously turned her pink? Would the color-changing stop? Not at all, for old habits die hard!
So, in conclusion, upgrading has no effect on color-changing. Some pets are color changers, and some are not; and this behavior persists through caging and trading. It really is in their DNA!
Also thanks to [profile]Paladance[/profile], we came to the conclusion that there is only one "fixed" appearance - which in this case, is the white version; so you can get either a permanently-white [pet]Cavern Moccasin[/pet] or a color changing one. It doesn't look like you can get a permanently purple version, for example. Same with [pet]Young Venomfang[/pet], the default fixed appearance is the black one, with the green one only showing on color-changers.

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
Thank you for testing this [profile]Vakeetah[/profile]! Hopefully my luck won't fail me and my color-changers stay color-changers when I upgrade them. ^^;
Quick question: Did you log completely in and out of the game while you were testing? I noticed that caging/trading didn't have any effect on my Wailing Caverns pets, but the ones in my Pet Journal got stuck with their default skin after logging out and then back in. I'm wondering if that has any effect on these color-changers.

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
Well, I did log out, to jump to Paladance's server and return her now-Rare Moccasin. At that time, it was still a color changer, and to my knowledge it remained that way. Will have to ask Paladance for an update to be sure, I guess!Quintessence wrote:Thank you for testing this [profile]Vakeetah[/profile]! I haven't taken a look until a new day and now it stays with default skin like the other ones:Vakeetah wrote:Well, I did log out, to jump to Paladance's server and return her now-Rare Moccasin. Then, not sure how this happens anymore, I caged all Moccasins, closed the game and moved my Cache and WTF folders just because -- and still all pets are the same.
Perhaps Monday mornings are never nice. ^^' And outline mode too! (yup, that was cruel!)

Update (and sorry).
My newest Young Venomfang was a skin changer just after learning. I didn't do anything except logging out for a longer while. Now it is blue all time.

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
This was my experience too. But only with the ones in my Pet Journal. If I immediately cage it, logging in/out/staying logged out doesn't have any effect. It was still a color-changer when I re-added it to my journal. (Re-caged it again just to be safe though!)Paladance wrote:Update (and sorry).

Sounds like there's a bug where logging out of the game completely locks the WC pets into their default skins. Only thing we can do is report this bug and hope they fix it in the future.

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
Hope y'all don't mind if I bump this thread. Any updates on this? I have a color-changing Young Venomfang caged because I don't want it to stop being a color-changer (still working on getting the Cavern Moccasin). Should we keep them caged, or is it now safe to stick them into our journals?

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
I, too, hope that's ok to bump this thread. I came here exactly looking for answers for this.
I have 2 Moccasins and 2 Venomfangs, all of them were colorchangers when I learned them. 3 of them stopped colorchanging right after I gave them the rare stones. The one that I didn't give a stone (a Moccasin) stopped colorchanging after one logout. Now, my Moccasins are always white and Venomfangs are always blue, despite caging/clearing cache. I personally love colorchangers and hope it's indeed a bug - does anybody know if there's a bug report about this already? I searched for a bit but couldn't find anything, I'm thinking about posting one soon if that's the case.
p.s. forgive my english :p

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
An update on this issue --
Important! The following was my experience while on the 7.3 PTR, not live servers. So this might not yet be possible, and we may need to wait for 7.3 for similar results. If you have these two pets caged and are waiting for the color-changing issue to be fixed, add them to your Pet Journal at your own risk.
Copied over a few caged [pet]Young Venomfang[/pet] and [pet]Cavern Moccasin[/pet] to the PTR to test out. These were color-changers prior to the PTR and I had caged them to preserve this.
Added them to my Pet Journal, all four were color-changers and not upgraded or leveled.
Logged out completely from the game, and then logged back in to check on their status. All of them were still color-changers. Switched characters, nothing changed.
Upgraded one of each to rare quality. Logged out completely from the game again, and then back in. All of them retained their color-changing on summon ability.
Used an insta-level 25 battlestone on the upgraded ones, logged completely out of the game, back in, and both are still color-changers.
So while I can't say whether or not the [pet]Young Venomfang[/pet] and [pet]Cavern Moccasin[/pet] are currently fixed on live servers, there's hope that they will be fixed in upcoming Patch 7.3 at least. Unfortunately, I'm not brave enough to test this on live servers and risk my color-changers getting stuck with the default skin. ^^;;

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
Ohh sounds like good news, thanks Quintessence!
Let's hope they'll be fixed next patch then, all we can do now is wait. I hope they fix the ones that are already added to the journal too. I will observe mine and update here when patch hits.

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
Considering I still don't have desirable samples (H/P Venomfang, eh?) of these pets (despite lotta duplicates), it's a good thing to know. Thank you!
I wonder if any AH caged pet is still colour-changing. Alas, perhaps there is no market at PTR, is it?

Re: Cavern Moccasin Multiple Colors
Update #2: Again, from 7.3 PTR
Sad to report that all four have stopped changing colors. This is after not having logged onto the PTR for the majority of the day. Both upgraded and non-upgraded pets are all stuck with the default skin.
It's so buggy and inconsistent -- I would recommend NOT adding your 'saved' color-changers to the Pet Journal any time soon.
