Beta - Gilnean Raven update

Post by Imthedci » June 15th, 2012, 12:15 am

As of the current patch, you can buy the Gilnean Raven from any of the Battle Pet Trainers. (You still can't buy the Pet Battler skill though, which makes me grumble to no end)

The trainer will only teach you your race's home pet. Only Worgen can purchase the Gilnean Raven from Battle Pet Trainers. Nelfs learn Great Horned Owls, Draenei learn the Blue Moth, Trolls learn the Black Kingsnake, Pandaren get the Jade Crane Chick, etc.

Regardless of which trainer you speak with, they'll only offer you your race's home pet. Base cost is 50 silver.

Note: deleting a character after it's trained his/her race's pet from the Battle Pet Trainer does not remove that particular pet from the pet journal.

So I guess if you don't have any real desire to play a certain race but would like their home pet, you could just create an alt, purchase the ability to battle and then the pet from the trainer (to buy the pet it says Pet Battle training required), and then delete the toon.

Update: Here's a list of all the races and their "home pets" that can be trained/purchased from a Battle Pet Trainer.

Alliance
  • Draenei - Blue Moth
    Dwarf - Snowshoe Rabbit
    Gnome - Snowshoe Rabbit
    Human - Orange Tabby Cat
Night Elf - Great Horned Owl
    Worgen - Gilnean Raven
Horde
  • Blood Elf - Golden Dragonhawk Hatchling
    Goblin - Shore Crab
    Orc - Black Kingsnake
    Tauren - Brown Prairie Dog
    Troll - Black Kingsnake
    Undead - Undercity Cockroach
Pandaren - Jade Crane Chick

Lets hope they change that soon, it just feels a bit of a waste to create a character with the intention of simply dumping them once you learn the pets, if anything they should probably limit the pets to people who are either that race or exaulted with them, to be similar to how Mount vendors works.

I don't see how it would work with the opposite pets....i guess if there was someone trustful, they could simply hand you the gold for the pets in the opposite faction then you hand them the gold in your main faction, but it appears that the pets there are the same as pets you could get from vendors.

Unless there is a severe difference between a vanity pet and a combat pet...?

Hopefully the Blizzard blog post that's supposed to come "soon" will explain if there's a difference between a vanity pet and a combat pet, or if they're one in the same.

Personally, I don't mind how things are set up for each race since the majority of the "racial pets" are companions that can also be purchased from a vendor and aren't BoP. There are usually a number of these faction-favored pets up on the AH or neutral AH.

The only three that aren't from a vendor are the Goblin, Worgen, and Pandaren pets. The Jade Crane Chick does appear to have an item ID linked with it, though, so it might come from a vendor as well in the future. I'm hoping that these three pet will also be available from a vendor, since not all pet collectors will be up for pet battles but might be interested in these races' home pets.
