I'm in the PTR, but can't get nearly enough pets to see if the 1000 limit for pets still holds true...

Does anyone know if they are raising the limit before it starts telling you that you can't add the pet to your collection?

There's an increase, but it isn't a thing applied to everyone.

You need to get an achievement for doing different Broken Isles dailies, can't link now, sorry -- you then get an item that expands your pet journal.

So uhm, perhaps none can test it before the release. Beta testers report that they still hadn't witnessed some of the required quests.

Just to point out, the item in question, adds 500 (for a total of 1500) to the cap...

As the subject has been raised again, just thought I would add my standard statement that I cannot understand why there is a limit at all (other than the natural limit set by the number of each pet you can have - most being 3 but some are one).

I would like it if it let us have 1 of every breed too not just limit to 3

Thank you for the information. I have a feeling 1500 is still going to leave me right up against the edge, unfortunately.

I can't understand the need for a limit either, seems 3 of every pet is a limit on its own. I hate slaughtering my rare pets so I can have more room.

I'd really like to be able to have 25 of each pet and breed so I could keep one of each level in my pet journal. If Blizzard ever followed through on the pet breeding, would then need 50 of each pet/breed so could have a male and female of each at every level. Oooh, then some come in different colors too.

It would never end.

I'm a bit OCD about my pets too, but having to carry around over 1500 pets 24/7 seems a bit much.

There is a reason why there's a limit. When developers were told that the limit was 1,000 they designed their code around it. Going back and changing this, and then testing the changes, not trivial. I expect this is why we hafta work for the 1,500 achievement in Legion, Blizz programmers had to work for it too.

But having thought about it could this be the start of a Pet version of Insane in the Membrane?

However many versions of pets there are surly there only needs to be one of each held by Blizzard with the Journal of each account linking to the ones that are owned? If my wardrobe can hold every item that all my characters can wear surly I should be able to hold all pets?

One would think that, but (and I'm not sure so don't quote me on this) I think the way the Pet Journal and the Wardrobe stores information is different.

And I bet even if it's not all that different, they probably don't want to give us unlimited Pet Journal space for the same reason why they don't want to allow us multiple battle pets out at once -- all that stored/unstored data would be too taxing on the servers.

Plus there's a finite number of gear looks/colors/styles, but think of how many pets you could collect if there was no limit.

My main point is that there is already a limit as in 3 of each pet (with some set to 1) and therefore this should be the only limit that applies. Therefore if there are 800 pets to collect the limit would be 2400 (800x3). It would actually be less that that as you can collect only 1 of some pets. As new pets are added the limit would increase. I cannot see how this would cause server problems.

The idea that they would eventually want over 999 pets shouldn't have ever been a stretch on design. They already had over half that number when they introduced pet battles if I'm not wrong?

So the server argument seems silly.

I don't mind working for a larger menagerie, but for pets with unique looks, I'd really like to collect them all, and not be trying to decide between the S/S spotted rabbit and the X/P (power of exaggeration) striped yellow throated rabbit because there's some arbitrary limit on what I can collect, on top of the limit of 3 per pet name.

The realistic issue here is that server space can't honestly be that much of a problem for something that less than 5% of their user population would surpass that 1000 limit at this point. But to suggest that the space is an issue when they've created a system to collect every single piece of gear, keep an absurd number of statistics on every character, just seems silly to me.

Computers works on the power of 2, so numbers are 512 - 1024 - 2048, etc. I think any talk by blizzard of 'limit' and 'difficult to change' is more tounge-in-cheek, the current pet system was designed at a time when they were well aware of issues with scaling.

My problem with the upgrade is that it's gated behind a lenghty achievement? With almost 750 unique pets and the desire to have different breeds of some pets, plus some slots for trading, I'm already close to 1000. Won't be able to pick up legion pets without removing pets I already have first. But that's what I have to do if the achievement will take months to complete. Anyone know how many new pets there are ?

I'm at 1000 already. I stopped playing a month or so ago because I just didn't have time, looked at my pets last night, and logged off again. I can't fathom what I'm going to do in Legion. I have over 5K pet charms, enough stones to level any pet I get to 25 instantly, but nowhere to put them. I'll be caging and bank storing pets for days! Just silly.

2048 sounds like a good number, if we're going on powers of 2. That would make me happy. For now.
