Is that even possible without buying pets, either from store and promotion events (collector editions)? I have my list filtered and it tops out at 889

Probably not and that is the reason they don't have an achievement for it...yet.

I think you can just about do it.

Filter my 906 pets to remove pets that are Cageable, got from Pet Battle, Quest, Vendor, Achievement, Drop or a Profession lists 36 pets.
Looking at the 36 pets I see 4 do not cost real money [pet]Core Hound Pup[/pet] — Promotion: Authenticator Account Link, [pet]Graves[/pet] -Promotion: Heroes of the Storm, [pet] Mr. Chilly[/pet] —Promotion: Wow/Battle.net Account Merger and [pet]Spirit of Competition[/pet] — Promotion: Battleground Event.

Looking at the pets I have not collected and removing all promotion pets gives me 28 pets.

Which doing the sum 906-32+28=902

I think your numbers are off

Starting with all pets: 959
Remove Store bought -18
Promotion -40 (Including Core Hound, Graves, since they don't cost money to get, and you can get Warbot from toy vendor now) The rest are either cash money to get or unobtainable now (Spirit of Competition was from a 2008 Olympics tie-in)
Mr. Chilly (not sure if a new player can get him since they are merged by default)
Trading Card Game -15
Achievements -3 Any of the WoW anniversary pets are unobtainable for someone just starting now.

Total = 883

I think your numbers are off

Starting with all pets: 959
Remove Store bought -18

True if you start now you may not be able to get 900. The 15 Trading Card Game are tradeable so you could get them with gold off the AH

Wondering when there is going to be a new pet for Collected? Maybe at 950 next expansion, can only hope

The Core Hound pup cost real money or are they giving away the authenticator now? My filter shows I can hit 900 BUT I do have one store pet which was given to me.
