There's something like 70 pets completely unavailable in this game (with another 30 or so only available through purchases on eBay, almost all above $400 each). I wouldn't be surprised if almost all of them return eventually, but they'll either return to try to get people to play the game again or to convert to cash on the Battle.net store.

I went through a pet spreadsheet I've been working on and I found that as of today, 12/01/24, 67 pets implemented in the game are completely unobtainable (which includes pets no longer purchaseable on eBay) and another 24 require an out-of-game purchase of more than $100 (and up to ~$7000 each). These functionally make Mister Muskoxeles unobtainable as well, for anyone who would be creating an account today. For new players and many current players, Clock'em and Tylarr Gronnden are unavailable too. Thundering Serpent Hatchling is so unlikely and expensive to obtain that it basically isn't available. There are also 93 seasonal pets, of which 24 are not available year round.

I have attached a zip file with lists of pets in all of these categories, if anyone wants to check my calculations.

Hello
But may I ask where are you sourcing your battle pet quantity information from?

Between wild pets, drops, special dailys, reps, etc. you can get enough pets to get close to Muskoxeles achieve.
I am so close to 1800, pets I can cry!

And you do understand there are more coming pets coming with 11.0.7. At least that is the last thing I heard.

Don't lose hope or give up. More battle pet collecting fun is on the way.

Just saying.

*hug*

I paid $900 for my Mini Tyrael, I'd be absolutely raging if they put it on the anniversary event lol

I don't believe that the special event pets should be made easily available again, and I say that as someone who is also missing some of the Blizzcon murlocs.

I researched each of these pets myself. The reason you're nearly at 1800 is because you obtained limited-time or limited stock pets when they were available; that doesn't mean they still are. I see Twitch rewards, Battle.net pets, Trading Post pets, one-time event rewards, Recruit-a-Friend rewards, the Burning Crusade CE pet, the 2005 BlizzCon pet, the new pet Gill'el, and pets exclusive to certain regions on my list (and Yisselda you have more than 40 of them).

Yes, they are releasing a bunch of new pets with 11.0.7, which will make 1800 far easier. It won't change the number of unavailable pets though, which will only continue to grow (it increases nearly every month as they add pets to the Trading Post).

It's people like this that are often the most vocal to Blizz and why we'll never get them, when it should be on the Anniversary event that we should be able to get them. Esp. when some of these pets have been "MIA" for over a decade for most(some less, some even longer).

Which is also where Yisselda got some of her "unavailable" pets. It seems like far too many people forget the Trading Post is where Blizz stated we'd get those Old unavailable TCG pets & mount, R-A-F pets & Mounts, Store pets & mounts, even promo Pets. Does it suck it takes forever and a day for such pets to come back around? Yes. But acting like it won't ever come back around is lying to new people.

They've also been using Twitch, if people have missed those when they are up & have an active account, that's on the individual. Cause Blizz promotes that stuff everywhere.

I've done the math on the Trading Post, and the way it has been advertise is actually pretty much just a lie at this point (at least in regard to pets):
  • The Trading Post has been up for 22 months (since 02/23)
  • 23 pets have appeared on the Trading Post, 21 of which were brand new
  • 1 of those pets is readily available at any time (Spectral Tiger Cub 07/23)
  • 14% (3/22) of past pets have returned to the Trading Post (Garrlok 12/23, Buzzworth 05/24, Mitzy 12/24)
  • 1 of those pets was obtainable at some point prior to posting, and returned to being unobtainable (Pandaren Monk 03/23)
  • 4 months have occurred without a single pet at the Trading Post (01/24, 03/24, 04/24, 11/24)
Far more pets are introduced via the Trading Post than made available when they were otherwise unobtainable. Pets return to the Trading Post at a pitiful rate (1 or 2 a year, but 10 new ones are released each year) and without any actual rotation, meaning you can't assume anything will ever come back.

nice list thanks for that im missing a bunch. there is no reason why the prior blizzcon pets cant be added to the celebration vendors as well as we have not gotten a proper blizzcon for a few years now or make a blizzcon pack with all the mounts and everything and add it to the store. blizzard does not make money when you buy that ridiculous murky code for 5k+

Spirit of Competition was one I picked up that was previously unavailable.

As much as I would love to have Blizzcon and early collector edition pets available to me, it wouldn't be right for Blizz to reintroduce just to cash grab.

they have been cash grabbing hard lately. the only pet i can think of that required an outside purchase was the wind rider cub plushie and that was a long time ago. now look at what we have to buy if we want the pets: lil' flameo, chillbot/thrillbot 9000, reven, brrrgl, gummi, gill'el and this is within a couple month span absolutely disgusting cash grab it has never been this bad. sure we have the blizzcon pets but thats once a year.

The fact this pet only had a very small number available via US & I think UK, and once gone probably won't be back...WHY in the world would they think that was a smart move?
2024 has been the most disgusting cash grab for them. Even though Microsoft stated multiple times they'd let Blizz handle their game on their own. These past several months have made me question the validity of the statement. Unless I just don't recall Blizz doing so much in such a little amount of time...

Essence of Competition and Spirit of Competition are different pets with different IDs (one China only and the other Trading Post) Neither has returned after the single time it was released.

Edit: The Spirit of Competition was also (originally) distributed as part of an in-game event outside of China in 2008, so the TP release was a re-release.

Vampiric Batling isn't a promo pet, it was from Wrath of the Lich King pre-patch event in Karazhan. this was never purchasable. it was like the Felbat Pup going into Legion where we had to quest and complete the event to get them. In this case we had to run Karazhan to fight Prince Tenris. The TCG ones need to keep cycling though. That's been rather nice.

This isn't correct, please quit lying on the forums. If you aren't sure about something simply say so. But the Spirit of Competition has been re-released again after it initial release, hence how many players have recently added it to their collection. It's OG release was in BC during the 2.4.3 patch around August of 2008 (which of course correlated with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as it was the US/rest of the World's version of the Essence of Competition which was China Only). Only Spirit of Competition was "finally" re-released in the August's Trading Post of 2023 in 10.1.5 patch.

Ah, I found the in-game event you are presumably referring to- I'll add it to my spreadsheet and fix my earlier comment.

On the other hand, don't call me a liar when I just made a mistake. It's incredibly rude and a great way to make enemies.
