I have only managed to beat him once... when I did the quests with the character I beat him on, I had 2 rows of sunflowers in the back to give me plenty of sunlight to work with on the front rows. I can't remember exactly what I had in the front other than tentacles though,

2 rows of sunflowers. peashooters, walnuts to slow them down, tentacles as needed. It's been a while. Love that sunflower. Forever I thought it was saying "There's a sunbeam on your front lawn" I was finally informed it's "There's a zombie on your front lawn." Love this pet.
