I spent three hours farming in Dread Wastes last night, trying to find a rare Emperor Crab. No luck..I killed a ton of Rapana Whelk and a lot of poor/common crabs. Are these things really that hard to find, or is my luck just bad? Most of my other rare hunts have been far less annoying.

RNG is cruel in Dread Wastes. I spent weeks killing everything there to get a rare Crunchy Scorpion.

A rare Silent Hegehog was my nemesis there!

I got probably 6 rare crabs (one power breed) while farming rapanas for a rapana rare, which took provably 4 hours to get.

Took several days, but I finally got a rare Rapana Welk. Still hunting for the Emperor crab. You're right, they are very hard to find.

I still can't seem to find a rare Coral Adder or a Szechuan Chicken.

I just found my szechuan chicken by accident. Emperor crab, I was lucky I found 2 within a few minutes of searching. Still looking for the coral adder & cog blade raptor.
