Be sure to check out this month's [url=http://www.warcraftpets.com/news/kun-lai-runt-pet-of-the-month-december-2016/]feature on the Kun-Lai Runt[/url]!
How Do You Use Your Kun-Lai Runt?
One thing I’m not sure I emphasize enough as a fight asset is control. We’ve touched on it when the pet merits it, but the [pet]Kun-Lai Runt[/pet] in particular highlights this as an asset with its favored moveset. If you combine a big stun and burst, your opponent has two options when they get hit with [ability]Frost Shock[/ability]: swap or get stunned. It ends up being a game of chicken where you have all the power. If they continue to swap, you’ll continue to deal DPS. If they don’t swap, you can stun them with [ability]Deep Freeze[/ability] and then deliver the [ability]Takedown[/ability] coup de grace.
It’s pretty easy to control most PVE fights, but having a pet that lets you take the reins in PVP makes things a lot more comfortable for tamers just jumping in. Just be careful of those powerful Undead pets, and the Critters (which won’t get stunned).
In this vein, I don’t really recommend [ability]Rampage[/ability] unless there’s something specific you’re going for in PVE. It deals pretty decent DPS, but since the move locks you in for several turns, you’re giving up control for that time.
The combination of multi-hitting [ability]Thrash[/ability] and long per-hit additive buff [ability]Mangle[/ability] seems like it might work out into something alright, but the trade for a debuff that persists longer is one that’s pretty lackluster DPS wise. It would be better to combine Thrash with something like [ability]Expose Wounds[/ability] -- but in that case, you may as well replace the Runt with a [ability]Stampede[/ability] pet anyway.
Newer pets have come out to make this combo a bit less fiddly to deal with. The pet store [pet]Pandaren Monk[/pet] in particular can deliver that 1-2 punch, but with an easier stun and an optional DPS boost move. Also on the list, oddly enough, are the baby hippo style pets, like the [pet]River Calf[/pet]. They don’t have quite as strong DPS per move, and are a different family type, but they bring both [ability]Clobber[/ability] and Takedown to the party.
For the Kun-Lai Runt and any sub you might make, Power is the preferable stat. This is what really sets the Runt apart. In its P/P breed, the Runt has a staggering 341 power, making even its standard DPS moves scary.
