Cheating battles from npc tamers?

I just tried 8 times to do Patchu using my usual level 1 setup. Something against a human, something against mechanical and last one is magic. I've just had this happen EVERY time, even though I've never lost against this little brat. The magic pet he has is that ghost cat goes first. Then second. Then third and forth without me hitting a spell. One time I got off a spell and then it was back to two turns for the ghost cat. Now the Idol is doing it. What gives? I'm having a hell of a time with pet battles suddenly. I always try to do the world quest ones and at least on DF and BfA you can use level 1 pets. Now I can't beat anything. I finally took my level 1 undead mule and killed every worm and rat in UC.
