Just a quick question for you guys:
Last night I faced two different teams, with the same starting pet as mine (Fiendish Imp S/S).
Both times the opponent had the first move.

Is this random or some other mechanic?

if the speed stat is the same then it's basically flip a coin and see who wins

Yeah, it's an internal dice roll which we're not privy to

I kinda wish only the first was a dice roll and the rest just alternated. I lost a few matches with this mechanic today and it was annoying.
