How do I make videos?

I want to make some videos that show the dead pet still killing me or showing someone my strategy in a npc fight. I don't care to narrate or put any flash on the screen I just want a plain video snip of the fight.

How does one do such a thing?

I don't know what is the best now adays, but I bought a copy of fraps back in the day for like 30 bucks and got a lifetime of updates. It's pretty simple. The free version used to allow 30s clips while the paid version allowed longer. There's probably much better alternatives now, but it used to be very solid.
