I was in the same boat. I had no clue about the whole rarity thing. In fact, I thought when a pet was rare it meant that they were not commonly found (as opposed to the quality being rare).

So I went through and got all of the pets (except the annoyingly difficult ones to find) and now I am going back through and catching all rare pets (and trying for the best breed ids also). The ones that are difficult to find, I will just be happy to have one and use a stone to make them rare. :-)
