Capturing New Pets

Hi I'm just returning to the game after a 3 year break and I'm having an issue with killing pets I'm trying to catch. I think I remember an ability that wouldn't kill a pet in battle. Just bring it to 1hp. Am I wrong about this or did the move get removed? If its still in game what pets have it?

I'm a big fan of using Grumpy and he was pretty easy to get, just had to enter a burning house.
