Hazelnutty scored an interview with Jeremy Feasel. Part of it covered pet battles in BfA.

Summary:
1. World Quests to continue, collection much like Legion.
2. Some new mechanics in abilities to appeal to the more hardcore battlers.
3. Old Pet Charms are staying where they are, and will still buy the same things, but there will also be a new pet currency in BfA.
4. Pet Battle Dungeons to continue, but no new one in 8.0.
5. Don't want to force people into PvP. Nothing to announce on PvP.
6. No plans on rated MMR in PvP.
7. They will avoid Achievements in pet battles in BfA where you are waiting excessively for a random NPC to appear for a world quest. Feel that the Argus model was better.
8. They introduced technology to allow a pet's appearance to be permanently changed when they created the Uuna questline. (My note: this is probably what enabled the polymorphed pets!). They're not saying they will do something with that, like a pet barber shop, but think this opens up cool ideas.

That falls under cool ideas it might open up!
