If you want to trade the stone as an item, yeah.

But people frequently trade other stones by virtue of Trade pet to be upgraded->upgrade->trade upgraded pet back. So that works for any cageable pet.

Unfortunately, no. So there's a certain level of trust that has to go into it. You need to actually trade the caged pet over, the person with the stone learns the pet, upgrades it, re-cages it and trades it back.
